Curriculum Purpose
Our curriculum advances children’s knowledge of the world by embracing the rich diversity of our school community to prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of modern life.
Curriculum Rationale
At Sudbury Primary School, we aim to provide every child with a rich, inclusive and engaging music education that develops a lifelong enjoyment of music. Our curriculum is delivered in partnership with our specialist music provider Sing Education and provides a clear progression of musical knowledge and skills from Nursery to Year 6.
Children develop as musicians through singing, listening, performing, composing and improvising. In EYFS, learning begins through movement, rhythm, songs, rhymes, listening and exploration of musical sounds. In Key Stage 1, pupils develop their understanding of pulse, rhythm and pitch, begin composing and are introduced to musical notation and instrumental performance. In Key Stage 2, these foundations are extended through staff notation, sight-reading, ensemble performance, composition and improvisation, using instruments including percussion and glockenspiels.
Our curriculum exposes children to music from a wide range of cultures, traditions, genres and historical periods, helping them develop their musical knowledge and cultural awareness. Pupils are taught appropriate musical vocabulary and progressively develop the confidence to discuss and evaluate music.
Assessment is ongoing and practical, enabling teachers to identify pupils working towards, meeting or exceeding age-related expectations and ensuring that all children can experience success as musicians.
