Rocks, Relics and Rumbles

In the Rocks, Relics and Rumbles project, your child will learn about the different layers of the Earth, including plate tectonics and their potential effects on the Earth's surface. Children will also learn about volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis and the long and short-term consequences that these can have.

They will investigate different types of rock, their uses and properties. In this exciting project, they will also investigate soil and fossils, including the work of Mary Anning. Learning about the lines of latitude and longitude will give them the opportunity to explore maps, use a compass and learn about the cardinal and intercardinal points. In Science, children will learn about contact and non-contact forces, including friction and magnetism. Their investigations will include looking into frictional and magnetic forces and identifying parts of a magnet and magnetic materials.

How you can help your child at home:

  • Read through the Knowledge Organiser together. It contains all the main facts that your child is expected to learn during their lessons.
  • Ask them questions about the Knowledge Organiser.
  • Display the Knowledge Organiser so it can be seen at home.

Also:

Reading a range of fiction and non-fiction books will help them develop a love of reading and help them acquire new knowledge, especially if the books are about volcanoes for instance!

Build on your child’s passions and interests: where you can, talk to your child about their interests and provide them with opportunities to find out more. Your support will make a massive difference to their self-esteem, confidence and learning.
