Curriculum Map
Ancient Civilisations
In the Ancient Civilisations project, your child will learn about one of the earliest civilisations in the world: Ancient Sumer. They will study the ancient Sumerian civilisation in detail, for example, to find out how they used water and farming to help them to develop and thrive. Throughout the project, they will find out about important inventions and the growth of cities. In order to make comparisons between this ancient civilisation and current day, pupils will also study the lives of different people, including the lives of kings. Towards the end of the topic, they will explore the causes and consequences of the civilisation’s decline and think about what the ancient Sumers left behind.
How you can help your child at home
- When your child brings home the Knowledge Organiser for the Project, make sure it is kept in a safe place for you and your child to read and use together e.g. display it on your fridge.
- Find a quiet time to read through the Knowledge Organiser together. It contains all the main facts your child is expected to learn during their lessons. Regularly ask them questions to check what they have learned and understood.
- Reading a range of fiction and non-fiction books with your child will help them develop a love of reading and help them learn new knowledge.
- Build on your child’s passions and interests: Where you can, talk to your child about their developing interests and provide them with opportunities to learn more.
Your support will make a massive difference to their self-esteem, confidence, and capacity to develop their skills and knowledge.
