Year 6
Curriculum Map
Frozen Kingdoms
In the Frozen Kingdoms project, your child will learn about the regions of the Arctic and Antarctic. They will learn about the similarities and differences between these two regions, including the climate, landscape and natural resources. Also, pupils will investigate polar oceans to learn how they differ from other oceans on Earth. The children will research climate change and how increases in the Earth's temperature is leading to rising sea levels as well as having other extreme effects on the polar regions. In addition, they will learn about the indigenous people of the Arctic, including how their lives have changed over time, and about the positives and negatives of tourism in Antarctica. Finally, they will also learn about classifying animals, animal adaptations and evolution as well as polar exploration and discovery.
How you can support your child’s learning:
- Look at maps or a globe together to locate the Arctic and Antarctic, and compare where they are in relation to the UK.
- Watch age-appropriate documentaries or short videos about polar regions and animals, and talk about how animals are adapted to survive in extreme cold.
- Read your child’s Knowledge Organiser with them and discuss the key vocabulary and facts (this will be sent via Class Dojo by their teacher).
- Talk about climate change and link it to everyday actions at home, such as saving energy or reducing waste.
Read fiction and non-fiction books about polar exploration or indigenous Arctic communities to build background knowledge. - Discuss tourism in Antarctica by considering why people visit and exploring both the benefits and potential negative impacts.
